The Santa Teresa Tram

The little trams climbing and descending the slopes of Santa Teresa are the main attraction here. These charming vehicles first appeared in 1872 and were once the city's main means of transport. From the tram driver you hear colourful, curious stories. Outside you see cultural centres, old estates, castles, squares, restaurants, studios and craft shops. Besides the stunning scenery all around, up above you can spot Christ the Redeemer, blessing the Cidade Maravilhosa. The trams always make a short stop so passengers can visit the Museu do Bonde (Tram Museum), which tells the whole story of the vehicles and displays some of their old replicas — true relics preserved in time.
