La Vereda

If there is one Brazilian craft shop in Rio that stands for good taste, it is La Vereda. The shop sells hundreds of items made by small artisans from all over the country and delights its visitors. Among the pieces: clothes, decorative objects, furniture made from reclaimed materials, jewellery, bedspreads, tapestries, hammocks, chandeliers, lamps, ceramics, pictures. And best of all: at an affordable price. It started in 1999 with the Argentine Maria Vitória, known simply as Mavi, who fell for the neighbourhood of Santa Teresa and for Brazilian craft. The shop's stock was built up through trips to every region of the country, in a real hunt for pieces. No wonder the shop is always full of customers eager for something to take home. At La Vereda you can also find CDs of Brazilian music, books, high-resolution old photographs of Rio, prints, miniatures of the Santa Teresa tram, miniature favelas, soapstone crafts and other treasures.
